As you may know, MICAP’s mission is to educate the Michigan citizenry about the consequences of the abuse of beverage alcohol and promote a social policy which will eliminate or mitigate these dangers. Being that this is our mission, it should not be a surprise that MICAP supports raising the excise tax on beer. There are several reasons why we support this life saving policy:
1. There is a tremendous amount of research that overwhelmingly demonstrates that raising alcohol taxes will save lives and reduce alcohol related harm.
2. This is long overdue. Michigan has not raised the beer tax since 1966. The beer tax has also NOT been tied to inflation.
3. Critical prevention, treatment, and recovery support services have been cut drastically since 1997 and the additional revenue raised could be put toward prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.
For these reasons MICAP supports raising the excise tax on beer and putting the additional revenue toward prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. Additionally, MICAP encourages everyone to do the following:

If you belong to an organization, please encourage your organization to sign the organizational supporter form (click here).
Call or email your State Representative and State Senator and ask them to support raising the beer tax!
Educate others and ask them to support the effort to raise the beer tax.
